1990 NISSAN R90CP No.23
In 1990 Nissan ended its partnership with Lola in the development of the R89C for the LeMans 24 hour race and embarked independently on the development of a new machine. This machine was the R90CP. While its basic center monocoque package was adopted from the R89C, a newly designed cowl produced improved aerodynamics and the evolutionary V8 turbo VRH35Z engine delivered dramatic improvements in racing potential.
The R90CP made its debut in the domestic Japanese championship and continued to enhance its performance with repeated race activity. The next challenge was the LeMans. Nissan entered 7 machines in that year, but only one R90CP, No.23 driven by Japanese trio Masahiro Hasemi, Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Toshio Suzuki. Having posted 3rd place in the heat, the R90CP maintained good position in the final race despite minor mechanical troubles, while other Nissan cars fell back. With one hour to go a gearbox change was required, but was executed in only 11 minutes, allowing the R90CP to claim 5th place, the best finish of any Japanese car and driver combination in 1990.
